It is sad. But there are alot of smart people who have figured out that by preying on these people's ignorance it is possible to become very wealthy and/or very powerful. The republicans, at least in the last 25 years, have used fear of the "other" to persuade these poor, dumb bastards that there is such a thing as "good" values--Christian values above all others without which the country would slide into a pit of degredation and ruin.
